What to Do With Old Recycling Bins

As waste segregation is now not only encouraged but also required in many parts of the UK, most households have separate bins for different types of waste, e.g., a black wheelie bin for general rubbish and a brown garden waste bin. Recycling bins help you divide household waste into recyclables, but have you ever wondered what to do with a spare or damaged bin?

What's the right way to dispose of recycling boxes once they are no longer needed? It depends on the reason why you want to get rid of the old bin. Let's take a look at a few examples.

What Can You Do With Your Old Recycling Boxes and Bins?

Repair

While modern bins tend to be quite sturdy, certain elements, such as hinges or wheels, are more susceptible to damage. Luckily, fixing such issues is not overly complicated, not to mention that it's usually the most eco-friendly and cost-effective option.

Recycle

If your broken bin is beyond repair, there may be no other option but to throw it away. Recycling containers are usually made of plastic or metal, both of which are recyclable, so it's important to ensure their proper disposal. You can check whether your local council offers a collection of large items or take your bin to a recycling centre in your area.

Replace

In case of damaged council-issued bins, they will be replaced by your local council once you report the problem. Make sure to ask your local authorities if they will remove the old bin when they deliver the new one and whether there are any additional charges for this service and your replacement bin.

New bins may also be needed due to new waste management rules in your area, e.g., if your containers are no longer suitable for collection or are in the wrong colours.

Reuse

It's also possible that you may want to dispose of your bin not because it's damaged but because it's no longer necessary or useful. For example, when your family grows, the amount of rubbish generated by your household increases as well and, sooner or later, you'll need to find new bins. Before you decide to throw away the old ones, take a minute to consider whether they can be used for any other purpose.

Your old garden waste or wheelie bin can easily be transformed into a compost bin or a practical container for garden tools. And if you're replacing your old recycling station with a bigger one, you can use old containers to store pet food, toys, tools or even seasonal decorations.
